Ponhpei, also known as Ponapé, is an island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, seven degrees north of the equator. Although it has a diameter of barely 64 kilometres, it is one of the biggest of the two thousand islands that make up Micronesia. This relatively large land-mass has made it into the capital of the young Federated States of Micronesia.
